The Long Now of Data

Code gets rewritten. Frameworks get migrated. Servers get retired. The rows in the database, however, tend to stay.

This is why a small amount of care at schema time pays off for a long time. Name the column for what it means, not for what it temporarily stores. Pick types that admit the future.

If you cannot imagine reading the table in ten years and understanding it, you have not finished designing it.
